Laser hair removal facts: everything you need to know before treatment

Laser hair removal facts

If you’re considering having laser hair removal, you’ll want to make sure you do your research before committing to treatments. Here at Smooth Laser Clinic, we like to ensure our clients are properly informed before they book their sessions, so we’ve compiled the key laser hair removal facts you’ll need to know.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by sending a pulse of light through the pigment in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat energy, which then damages the follicle, preventing the hair from growing back. As such, it’s a more permanent solution than waxing, epilating or shaving.

Laser treatments work best on dark hair, but recent advances in technology have meant that fairer, finer hairs can now be treated more effectively too.

How many treatments will I need?

Patience is key with laser hair removal. We recommend having 6-8 treatments at 4-6 week intervals. This enables the hair to progress through its natural growth cycle between treatments, making them more effective.

You won’t begin to see results until two to three weeks after your first treatment, so don’t be tempted to wax, pluck or epilate between sessions. It’s fine, however, to shave.

How do I prepare for a session?

Before having your treatment, the therapists at Smooth Laser Clinic will carry out a consultation and patch test to ensure you have no adverse reaction to the laser. There are also some key things to remember when having laser treatment:

  1. Ensure the area is shaved 24 hours before the treatment. This is because the laser can react with hair on the skin’s surface, causing irritation.
  2. Ensure the area is free from lotion, sun cream, deodorant and/or makeup before a treatment. If you have applied anything to the skin, let your therapist know so that they can provide a wipe. The area should be clean and dry.
  3. Keep the area out of the sun for at least four weeks prior to treatment, and don’t apply fake tan for at least three weeks prior to treatment.
  4. After your treatment, avoid hot baths and showers, the gym, and saunas for 24 hours.

Is laser hair removal painful?

The sensation you feel depends on the area being treated and, for women, your hormone cycle. Many clients liken the feeling to having an elastic band pinged against their skin, although the sensation can feel more intense in sensitive areas. At Smooth Laser Clinic, we have technology that minimises discomfort by cooling the skin where the laser is directed. This ensures an optimal, pain-free experience.

How long do sessions last?

The duration of your session depends on the area being treated. A small area such as the upper lip will only take around 10 minutes, while a full leg treatment might take up to 90 minutes. Your therapist will advise you on session times.
